Jamaican Fish Tea Recipe (Fish Soup)

Fish tea is a favorite appetizer before meals at many Jamaican events. It is typically served in a small foam cup. It can be served as a meal as a soup. Try our Jamaican Fish Tea Recipe.


  • 2 lb small fish
  • 3 qrts. water
  • 2 large or medium cloves garlic
  • 1 sprig thyme
  • 3 stalks escallion
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 4 finger of green bananas
  • 1 green scotch bonnet pepper
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper
  • few pimento seeds
  • 2 lemons or limes



  1. Wash fish in Vinegar or Lemon and drain
  2. Combine that fish, garlic and water to boil until fish is off the bone of the fish
  3. Pour the contents through a strainer and remove all bones.
  4. Wash the potatoes and cut small.
  5. Add the potatoes and salt to the strained soup.
  6. Peel and add green bananas.
  7. Let the soup simmer, then add thyme,escallion, pepper, pimento and black pepper
  8. Simmer for another 8 mins. then serve hot with excelsior water crackers
